Teeth Whitening

Having bright white teeth certainly gives you something to smile about! The emergence of over-the-counter whitening toothpastes and whitening strips shows just how important this is to millions of people. Although these drugstore treatments have some effect, they fall short of giving patients what they really want – a lasting white smile.

When you purchase a whitening kit or strips from the store, the strength of bleach you get whitens only the outer layer of your teeth; the enamel. This will produce a whiter look initially, but the real discoloration of teeth goes beyond the enamel. Your dentist is the only one who can provide treatment strong enough to wipe out these deep stains.

Stains may come from food, tobacco, medications, or your genetic make-up. Regardless of the cause, the bleaching action of Opalescence works incredibly well to counteract discoloration. We offer our patients the option of in-office whitening or a take-home kit they can use daily.

Patients like this particular at-home treatment because the gel is sticky and doesn’t migrate to the gums. This allows for a much more comfortable whitening session. To prepare a patient for his or her Opalescence whitening treatment, Drs. Hoag and Dotsch will determine the strength and type of gel most suitable, based on your desired results. A custom tray is created from impressions taken of your mouth. Opalescence gives you the opportunity to use gel that contains potassium fluoride (PF), which improves oral health by strengthening tooth enamel while decreasing sensitivity, and it helps to prevent cavities.

The in-office option, Opalescence Boost, enables the patient to walk out of the office with a brighter smile in 60 to 90 minutes. This treatment also features the use of potassium nitrate and fluoride to decrease sensitivity and improve oral health. What it doesn’t feature is heat or the use of ultraviolet light, unlike some other popular dental chair solutions. Simply mixed and applied, Opalescence Boost provides a perfect chemically-activated whitening system that produces a healthy white smile in one easy visit.
